Behind the Lens: A Shoot with Gentle Dental Riverside
I had the opportunity to photograph the team at Gentle Dental’s Riverside, CA location—a friendly and professional dental practice that’s part of a larger network committed to providing quality care with a gentle touch.
The shoot was part of an ongoing collaboration with Gentle Dental, aimed at refreshing their website, boosting their social media presence, and updating internal materials. The lead dentist also requested a new headshot, which turned out to be one of the highlights of the session.
Over the course of two hours, I focused on capturing clean, naturally lit portraits and detailed environmental shots that showcased the team’s professionalism and the space’s most photogenic features. While the office itself was a bit modest in design, strategic use of natural light helped bring warmth and calm to the images—echoing the laid-back, reassuring atmosphere the staff work hard to create for patients.
What stood out most was the team’s welcoming energy. From front desk staff to hygienists, everyone carried a sense of ease and confidence that made the shoot flow naturally. That kind of energy goes a long way in a dental setting, where comfort and trust are key. Through the lens, my goal was simple: make the team look as professional and approachable as they are in real life.
Photographing medical professionals—especially in the dental field—requires an understanding of industry standards, along with a sharp eye for clean compositions and inviting expressions. A genuine smile can make all the difference, both in the photo and in how a patient feels walking through the door.
It’s always rewarding to work with a group that values both professionalism and personality. Looking forward to more collaborations with Gentle Dental as they continue to put their best face forward—online and in the office.

📸 Tips for shooting in Dental offices
1. Scout the Location Ahead of Time
Look for areas with the best natural light—often near windows or in reception areas.
Identify cluttered zones you might want to avoid or clean up before shooting.
2. Use Natural Light Where Possible
Fluorescent lighting can be harsh and unflattering. Natural light softens skin tones and adds warmth to clinical spaces.
Bring a reflector or portable LED panel to supplement in darker treatment rooms.
3. Focus on Clean, Calm Compositions
Symmetry and minimalism go a long way in medical environments.
Use shallow depth of field to blur background distractions in busy rooms.
4. Capture the Human Element
Highlight interactions: team members talking, prepping tools, or welcoming patients.
Encourage genuine smiles—approachability is critical in healthcare branding.
5. Prioritize Headshots and Team Photos
Keep poses relaxed but professional. Opt for standing or seated positions near windows for soft, flattering light.
Ensure everyone’s wearing clean, appropriate uniforms or scrubs—no badge lanyards or PPE unless it fits the context.
6. Mind the Details
Get close-ups of tools, signage, branded materials, and clean workspace setups.
These small touches often round out a brand’s story in marketing materials.
7. Respect Privacy and Protocol
Always clarify HIPAA compliance and patient presence—never photograph patients without signed consent.
Follow office protocols around sanitation and space usage during shoots.
8. Make the Dentist Look Like a Star
The lead dentist is often the face of the practice. Capture them confidently and comfortably.
A fresh, polished headshot can be just as valuable as any marketing image.
